What is Bird Enrichment?

Have you ever been stuck indoors wishing you could be running around outside playing with your friends? Well, the animals at Providence Wildlife Rehabilitation (PWR) are often stuck indoors healing when they really want to be outside. To help combat boredom among the animals, their care-takers built them fixtures that help keep them entertained. We're hoping you can help us make games, puzzles, and other toys that the birds of prey at PWR would like to have in their enclosures. We'll provide a variety of materials; you just have to bring some ideas!

What is a Bird Enrichment Board?

The criteria is that the objects can be made of anything, but cannot contain lead.

Objects should be both durable and destructible.

The goal is to provide objects that can be manipulated.

Rope, natural fiber, wood, metal, plastic, cardboard are all fine.

Most of the birds at PWR are large (redtailed hawk, great horned owl, vulture) but we also have a kestrel and screech owl who are the size of a robin. And of course our crow would love puzzles to work on.

Watch this video about animal enrichment - https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/animal-enrichment - and start brainstorming ideas!
