Speech:  the use of oral communication to express one’s thoughts, emotions, and beliefs through sounds and gestures.

This class has been developed to teach and improve speaking skills for the high school student, grades 9-12.  Assignments are designed to teach students to express opinions in a gentle, yet convincing manner, supporting their opinions with acts, details, and examples.  The class is equivalent to one high school credit.

The course will work to achieve success in:

  • seeking the student's potential as a communicator.
  • conquering the fear of public speaking.
  • learning how to write an effective speech.
  • organizing a speech for maximum impact.
  • understanding how to persuade an audience.
  • delivering a message effectively to an audience.
  • learning what makes great speakers great.

Complementary and fun opportunities to speak will be interspersed throughout the semester.  These will include, but not be limited to events used during National Forensic League competitions, such as Original Oratory, Dramatic/Humorous/Duo Interpretation, Poetry or Prose Reading, and Storytelling.

Grades:  Determined from a combination of homework completion, class participation, rubric graded speeches, and an end of semester speech.

Textbook is available for rent from instructor with cost included in tuition fee.  We use:   Ready to Give an Answer For the Hope That is Within Them; Reish Family; Training for Triumph Family Services.

The total cost for the full semester is $155, which includes book rental fee.  Payments may be broken into $80 for the first quarter (to cover the book fee) and $75 for the second quarter.
